NICHOLAS HOULT, ROONEY MARA TEAM FOR THE DISCOVERY


 

Charlie McDowell is directing sci-fi love story;

Endgame Entertainment and Protagonist Pictures are co-financing

 

London, 27 October 2015:  Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara is set to star alongside Nicholas Hoult in THE DISCOVERY, a gripping love story set in a world where the existence of the afterlife is scientifically proven. The film will be directed by Charlie McDowell (The One I Love).

 

With The Discovery, McDowell and Justin Lader reprise  their collaboration from The One I Love. They co-wrote wrote this highly original script, which is set a year after the discovery. Hoult plays the son of the man responsible for this discovery and Mara plays a woman he falls in love with whose life is tinged by a tragic past.

 

Endgame Entertainment and Protagonist Pictures are co-financing the film, and Protagonist will introduce it to buyers at the AFM. ICM Partners is handling domestic rights. Shooting is scheduled to start in Rhode Island in Jan 2016.

 

Alex Orlovsky of Verisimilitude is producing the film alongside James D Stern of Endgame Entertainment. Orlovsky has a slew of award-winning credits including The Place Beyond The PinesBlue Valentine, The Wolfpack and Half Nelson. Stern and Endgame have produced a host of hit independent films including Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects which also starred Rooney Mara, Rian Johnson’s Looper, Lone Scherfig’s An Education, and Freeheld starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page, which is currently in theatresJulie Goldstein and Lucas Smith will oversee the project for Endgame. Mike Goodridge, Dimitra Tsingou and Eddie Vaisman are overseeing for Protagonist.

 

The Discovery is McDowell’s second feature after The One I Love, a critically acclaimed comedy which starred Mark Duplass and Elizabeth Moss and had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. TWC Radius released the film in North America.

 

Nicholas Hoult has become one of the most in-demand actors of his generation. He has played key roles in films such asMad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Clash Of The Titans and Warm Bodies. His upcoming films include X-Men: ApocalypseEquals directed by Drake Doremus and Rebel In The Rye in which he will play JD Salinger. Hoult is currently in production on Sandcastle directed by Fernando Coimbra. 

 

Over the last several years, Rooney Mara has garnered critical acclaim for her memorable performances in such films asThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, for which Mara was nominated for an Oscar.  Additional film credits include The Social Network, Side Effects, Her and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.  Mara will next be seen in the Todd Haynes 1950’s love storyCarol, opposite Cate Blanchett, where she was awarded Best Actress at the Cannes Film Fesival. Next year Mara stars inThe Secret Scripture for Jim Sheridan, Weinstein’s Lion for director Garth Davis and the adaptation of the critically lauded play “Blackbird” for director Benedict Andrews.  Mara recently completed production on the Untitled Terrence Malick film with Michael Fassbender and Ryan Gosling.
