MARTIN GROVE'S HOLLYWOOD REPORT -- 12/31/17

HOLLYWOOD REPORT FOR 12/31/17

2017 wasn't the best of times for Hollywood, but with over $11B in ticket sales it also wasn't the worst of times.

2017 through 12/31 is down 2.3% from 2016, per comScore's Paul Dergarabedian -- $11.12B vs. a record setting $11.38B.

Franchise fatigue and retread rejects ruined last summer, but 2017's top hits were all sequels, remakes or spinoffs. Moviegoers embraced familiarity and fresh RT scores:

(1) "STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI" (Disney): $517.1M through 12/31. Opened 12/15 to $220M. PG-13/91% RT. "STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS" (2015) did $936.7M. (Pictured – Daisy Ridley.)

(2) "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" (Disney): $504M. Opened 3/17 to $174.8M. PG/71% RT. Live remake of 1991 animated hit.

(3) "WONDER WOMAN" (WB): $412.6M. Opened 6/2 to $103.3M. PG-13/92% RT. Classic comic book/TV superhero.

(4) "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2" (Disney): $389.8M. Opened 5/5 to $146.5M. PG-13/83% RT. 2014 original did $333.2M.

(5) "SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING" (Sony): $334.2M. Opened 7/7 to $117M. PG-13/92% RT. "THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2" (2014) did $202.9M.

Last weekend's 3 day ticket sales of $195M, per comScore, were up 4.6% from 2016's $186.4M.

Here's to a splendid 2018!

Hollywood's ringing in the New Year, hoping for the kind of boxoffice success it hoped for, but didn't get, in 2017.

To see what audiences are most anticipating, the movie ticketing/info  service Fandango just polled 8,000-plus moviegoers, who said:

1.      "AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR" (5/4)

2.      "BLACK PANTHER" (2/16) (pictured)

3.      "JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM" (6/22)

4.       "DEADPOOL" sequel (6/1)

5.      "SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY" (5/25)

6.      "INCREDIBLES 2" (6/15)

7.      "FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD"        (11/16)

8.      "A WRINKLE IN TIME" (3/9)

9.      "X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX" (11/2)

10.    "OCEAN'S 8" (6/8)

All 10 are sequels, remakes ("WRINKLE" was a 2003 TV movie) or spinoffs ("SOLO's" from "STAR WARS" and "PANTHER's" title character launched in 2016's "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR"). Hopeful sign: 6 of the titles could generate a big boxoffice impact this summer.

Other key categories -- Horror Thriller: "CLOVERFIELD" sequel (2/2); Family Movie: "INCREDIBLES 2;" Movie Villain: Josh Brolin in "AVENGERS;" and Comic Book Character in Standalone Movie: Chadwick Boseman in "PANTHER."

Happy New Year to all!
