SECOND TIME SINCE 2012 THAT THE INDIE DISTRIBUTOR HAS GARNERED TWO NOMINATIONS IN THIS CATEGORY

NEW YORK (January 15, 2015) – GKIDS continues its Academy Award® streak with a double Oscar®  nomination for Best Animated Feature with SONG OF THE SEA and THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA. This marks the second time the independent distributor accomplished such a rare feat since it scored a double nomination with A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita in 2012.

As a distributor of award-winning animation that appeals to adult and family audiences, GKIDS also received previous nominations for Ernest & Celestine in 2014 and Tomm Moore’s The Secret of Kells in 2010 . Today’s nomination of SONG OF THE SEA and THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA  are the fifth and sixth Best Animated Feature nominations for GKIDS, the most by any independent distributor since the category was established.

 ABOUT  SONG OF THE SEA

SONG OF THE SEA tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse – the last Seal-child – who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The film takes inspiration from the mythological Selkies of Irish folklore, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land.

SONG OF THE SEA  marks the second nomination for director Tomm Moore and his production company Cartoon Saloon which garnered their first in 2010 with his debut film, the aforementioned The Secret of Kells. The film has also been nominated for seven Annie Awards including Best Animated Feature and Outstanding Achievements in Directing, Writing, Music, Editing, Character Design and Production Design.

ABOUT THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA
Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo, a tiny girl grows into an exquisite young lady, raised by an old bamboo cutter and his wife. From the countryside to the grand capital city, even unseen she enthralls all who encounter her, including five noble suitors.  Ultimately she must face her fate, punishment for her crime.

Based on the classic Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA is produced by the legendary animation company Studio Ghibli and the strikingly beautiful culmination of decades of contemplation by its director, Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata.

THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA recently won the Audience Award at 2014 Fantastic Fest and was named “Best Animated Film of 2014” by the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
