Disney Weekend 5/13 - 5/15 Global Estimates - "Captain America: Civil War," "Jungle Book" and “Zootopia"

 

With "Captain America: Civil War’s" estimated global cume surpassing $940 million, the Marvel Cinematic Universe reaches the $10 billion mark from 13 films over the course of 9 years. 

 

"Captain America: Civil War leapt the $800 million and $900 million marks this weekend to overtake the global cumes of "Spider-Man," "Batman v Superman" and "Spider-Man 3" and land as the #6 highest grossing superhero movie of all time. With $296 million domestically and $645 million internationally, it’s the #2 film of the year globally and the #1 film of the year internationally after 19 days of release and the #5 release of the year domestically after 10 days.

 

As previously announced, "The Jungle Book" ($828 million) surpassed $800 million globally on Friday and swept past the $300 million mark domestically on Saturday, posting an excellent -27% hold. Among Disney Live Action releases, it’s the #5 release of all time globally and the #3/#6 domestically ($311.7 million) and internationally ($516.3 million). In addition, this weekend it became the #1 film of the year in the UK/Ireland.

 

"Captain America: Civil War" and "The Jungle Book" once again took the #1 and #2 spots domestically for the second consecutive weekend.

 

With “Zootopia" at an estimated $970 million, Disney now has three of the top four films of the year globally with three consecutive releases grossing over $800 million. Disney releases have held the #1 spot at the domestic box office for 10 out of 20 weekends this year.

 

 

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

 

Captain America: Civil War has now opened in all international markets.

Globally IMAX screens grossed $10.9M for the weekend reaching a $63.7M cume.  In North America 379 IMAX screens grossed $5M for the weekend for a $24.5M cume.  8 of the top 10 grossing locations were IMAX engagements.  Internationally IMAX grossed $6.0M for the weekend on 576 screens for a $39.5M cume.

 

International

 

Captain America: Civil War posted an estimated $84.2M in its third weekend of overseas release from 55 material territories representing 100% of the international marketplace.

 

Overall

 

The Domestic cume to date ($296M) has already surpassed the lifetime cumes of Captain America ($177M), Ant-Man ($180M), Thor ($181M), Thor: Dark World ($206M) and Captain America: Winter Soldier ($260M).

 

With an International cume to date of $645M, Captain America: Civil War now stands as the 4th highest grossing super-hero movie of all-time internationally, behind only Avengers: Age of Ultron ($946M), The Avengers ($895M) and Iron Man 3 ($806M).

 

With a Global cume to date of $941M, Captain America: Civil War now stands as the 6th highest grossing super-hero movie of all-time globally, behind only The Avengers ($1,518M), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1,405M), Iron Man 3 ($1,215M), Dark Knight Rises ($1,085M) and Dark Knight ($1,005M).

Highlights

 

Captain America: Civil War posted an estimated $84.2M in its third international weekend, dropping -61% overall from last weekend (similar to Avengers: Age of Ultron at the same stage of play).  However, the drop-off differed by region. 

 

Europe and Latin America saw an overall drop-off of just -51%, with strong holds in key markets including Austria (-19%), Switzerland (-20%), Netherlands (-27%), Sweden (-34%), Germany (-35%), the UK (-45%) and Brazil (-42%).  Brazil has now seen Captain America: Civil War be the #1 movie for 3 weekends running while Captain America: Civil War was also #1 once again in UK, France and Italy.

 

In Asia, Captain America: Civil War is closing in on $400M for the region.  China is now at an estimated cume of $155.8M after just 10 days of playtime, making it the 3rd highest grossing Disney release there ever, behind only Zootopia and Avengers: AOU, and is the 2nd highest grossing super-hero movie ever, behind only Avengers: AOU.  Captain America: Civil War is the #1 industry release for a third consecutive weekend in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.  It is also already the industry all-time biggest release in the Philippines, the biggest Disney release in Philippines and Thailand, the #2 biggest Disney release in Vietnam, and #3 biggest Disney release in China, India, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

International Highlights

 

The Jungle Book enjoyed another strong hold this weekend, dropping just -39% internationally.  The run in China has now formally come to an end with a stellar $151M, making it the #4 Disney release ever there behind only Zootopia, Avengers: AOU and Capt Am: Civil War.  Other key territories on this movie still include France (-36%), Germany (-8%) and the UK (-30%), with Europe as a whole dropping just -33%.  India earned another $0.6M, a drop of only -15%, to take its record setting cume to $37.4M.  Finally, Latin America as a whole saw a drop of only -46%.
